Beta-alanine works as a type of “shuttle” that helps increase levels of carnosine in muscle cells.Technically, lactic acid itself is not the culprit for generating “the burn” and muscle fatigue. Instead, the positively charged hydrogen ions (H+) from lactic acid are what can accumulate in muscle tissue faster than the body can clear them. In turn, the acidity of muscle increases which interferes with muscle function.
Beta-alanine helps to “buy time” for athletes; enabling them to work at higher intensity for longer before fatigue sets in.
